The Explorer / The Domesticated

Darlene is a clown creation of Lyndsey Langsdale. She despises community, which she regards as the opposite of peace. She could be classified as a huntress archetype, but classification itself is an imposition she resists. Her habitat—recreated for the gallery with sagebrush, dirt, and the faint odor of skunk—is a space of radical solitude.
When Mallory and Lyndsey began planning the 2023 show, Lyndsey sent Mallory a photo of Darlene and said, “Darlene may be the clown to be involved in this one.”

Together, they identified Darlene as the first clear archetype: a figure who despises community, regards it as the opposite of peace, and demands to be left alone. Mallory and Lyndsey collaborated on Darlene’s “day out” in Virginia City—Lyndsey performing as Darlene, Mallory (and her daughter) photographing. Together they rebuilt Darlene’s den for the gallery, complete with sagebrush, dirt, and the faint odor of skunk.

The questions the archetype poses—
“What is the animal inside you?
How do you feed it?
